Historic Unedited Photos They Don't Want You To See
Jong Un has reigned as North Korea's Supreme Leader since 2011. He has been known to purge or execute his citizens (even family members) to preserve his power.
When it comes to the current leaders of the world, there are few that are as talked about as Kim Jong-Un. Even in western countries, Kim is often making headlines for his contentious nature with countries across the globe. He’s also one of the younger leaders of the world, making him a person that figures to be around for many years. There have been countless movies, books and much more that have covered Kim’s life to this point, thanks in large part to the way he rules North Korea and is constantly offering up threats of nuclear weapons to those who are not allied with him.
Kim is the son of Kim Jong-il, the former North Korean leader that had passed away in late 2011. Kim himself was said to have been born on January 8, 1982 in Pyongyang, though he might actually be two years younger than he claimed. Kim had an older brother growing up and spent much of his childhood in Switzerland where he was protected while he was in school.
Here, you see the young Kim in one of the rare photos as many weren’t allowed to be taken of him during that age. His childhood remains a mystery for many people outside of his immediate family, as only high ranking members of the North Korean government were allowed to have interaction with him. “It’s really sad,” said Sue Mi Terry of the CIA. “One picture of Kim Jong-il’s boy with that bratty grin. That’s what we were working with. And what we know about it was already in the New York Times…It really wasn’t much more than that.”
Not many people that had communicated with Kim during his childhood in Switzerland had many bad things to say about him, actually. Many said that he was fairly studious and personable with a love of basketball that eventually helped him to form a friendship with former NBA star Dennis Rodman. He wasn’t that focused on politics during his early years, instead focusing on the normal things that teenage boys care more about with sports and video games. One of his former teachers, Michel Riesen, said that Kim “was a good student, but he wasn’t extraordinary,” adding that he likely was able to learn English but chooses not to speak it in public on most occasions.
By the early 2000s, Kim Jong-il had three sons in total to choose from as his successor, which became even more important as his health started to suffer. Kim Jong-Un wasn’t considered by many to be the favorite to be the successor, but who was ultimately chosen toward the later part of the decade. By 2009, everyone had known that Kim was going to lead the country when his father no longer could.
To get him ready to assume leadership of the country, Kim had become high ranking member of the military and the Workers’ Party of Korea without having the experience that many in those positions would normally have. After his father passed away in December 2011, Kim assumed power though many considered that he wasn’t quite ready. Still, Kim assumed the office of the Supreme Commander by the end of the month, officially putting him in charge.
Since then, Kim has served as Chairman of multiple organizations within North Korea’s government and was once the First Chairman of the National Defence Commission. It seemed at first that things were going to change in North Korea as many saw Kim as a more lenient leader that could improve the morale of his citizens while also increasing North Korea’s standing with other nations of the world.
However, the opinion on Kim had quickly changed in the couple of years that followed. The United Nations had accused Kim of crimes against humanity, launching an investigation that resulted in multiple sanctions against the country. This meant that North Korea wouldn’t be getting the supplies that they needed for their citizens, leading the tensions rising between Kim and many other of the world’s leaders.
The problems became even worse as Kim started to develop nuclear weapons, holding many tests that other countries had seen as a major problem. More sanctions followed until Kim agreed to put a halt to the missile testing. Since then, Kim has met with some of the world’s most powerful leaders, including those from the United States, Russia and South Korea. These meetings have been seen as highly controversial in nature, as Kim remains a figure that’s mostly seen in a negative light in most countries of the world.
Kim’s plan to improve North Korea has been based heavily on increasing his military operations that includes these weapons. “The effort to develop the economy and improve the people’s standard of living can be successful only when it is backed by powerful military capabilities, nuclear forces,” he said. “In the spirit with which we conquered outer space and with the mettle with which we succeeded in the nuclear test of a high level, we must push ahead simultaneously with the campaign to the defend the country and the construction of an economic giant, and thus achieve the happiness of the people and the prosperity of the powerful Paektusan nation without fail.”
The size of Kim’s military operation is already high and only figures to increase in numbers in the future. As for the human rights situation in North Korea, it remains to be seen if that improves. For now, many are simply hoping that North Korea’s stance on dealing with other countries improves in the future to relieve the tensions that have been building since he assumed office.
